Scaling up ear and hearing care (EHC) services in Rwanda
Map of Rwanda
Objectives of the programme: To expand the Winsiga Ndumva ear and hearing care (EHC) programme across eight Rwandan districts, including ear screening and management, and the procurement and fitting of more than 928 high-powered digital hearing aids to 512 children with hearing loss.
Programme description: ATscale is working with UNICEF in Rwanda to support the Rwanda Biomedical Centre to deliver hearing aids to school-age children and teachers.
Programme results:
| In Rwanda, UNICEF's work drove down the cost of hearing aids from $2,000 down to $118, thanks to a national procurement strategy focused on demand and centralized purchasing. | |
| 83 health facilities are equipped with primary audiology equipment, while five model district hospitals, Ruhengeri, Nyagatare, Gihundwe, Nyarugenge, and Kabutare, received high-tech audiology equipment. These infrastructure upgrades enabled decentralized referral pathways and improved service quality. |
