Scaling up ear and hearing care (EHC) services in Rwanda

Map of Rwanda

Objectives of the programme: To expand the Winsiga Ndumva ear and hearing care (EHC) programme across eight Rwandan districts, including ear screening and management, and the procurement and fitting of more than 928 high-powered digital hearing aids to 512 children with hearing loss.

Programme description: ATscale is working with UNICEF in Rwanda to support the Rwanda Biomedical Centre to deliver hearing aids to school-age children and teachers.

Programme results:
In Rwanda, UNICEF's work drove down the cost of hearing aids from $2,000 down to $118, thanks to a national procurement strategy focused on demand and centralized purchasing.
83 health facilities are equipped with primary audiology equipment, while five model district hospitals, Ruhengeri, Nyagatare, Gihundwe, Nyarugenge, and Kabutare, received high-tech audiology equipment. These infrastructure upgrades enabled decentralized referral pathways and improved service quality.
