Programme management, coordination and support in implementing assistive technology activities to the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene, Government of Senegal

Map of Senegal

Objectives of the programme: To strengthen assistive technology as essential health products and services in Senegal by focusing on five interconnected dimensions: a people-centered approach, policy, products, delivery and people, with key objectives including building robust systems, facilitating service delivery, increasing availability of quality-assured assistive products, and enhancing staff capacity.

Programme description: A Wolof phrase, Bokk Na Ci (I am included) is the name of, and the driving force behind, Senegal's ambitious national programme, launched in 2023 by the National Center for orthopaedic Services (CNAO), supported by ATscale, in partnership with WHO and UNICEF, to transform access to assistive technology and support persons with disabilities.

Programme results:
The government is supporting the Bokk Na Ci programme and has committed $1.5m to the CNAO in 2025 and an additional envelope of $4.3m for assistive technologies over four years.
Seven regions have established their multisectoral committees on disability and access to assistive technologies.
The first batches of orthopaedic equipment were received by the CNAO and the first beneficiaries received the assistive products they needed.
Hundreds of assistive-technology-related indicators are being integrated into the DHIS2 platform. The improved health management information system (HMIS) will provide better data to inform assistive technology policies and programmes.
